From Nothing To One

Sasha Frere-Jones:

When people want to hear a song, they head to YouTube first-not to Spotify or Rdio or iTunes. By including YouTube, the new Billboard calculation takes account of the appearance of a song in a non-official setting, like fan videos. This is a smart and, in the scientific sense of the word, sensitive decision: the Hot 100 will now take the temperature of pop music in a way that may reflect how people are actually consuming pop music, a serious advance for a magazine that used to accept reports of record sales from record-store clerks saying, "Yeah, I think we sold about two boxes of 'Thriller.'"

The good old days, right?
