The Boston Common Colour Wheel

Flickr Flow "Our software calculated the relative proportions of different colours seen in photos taken in each month of the year, and plotted them on a wheel. The image below is an early sketch from the piece. Summer is at the top, with time proceeding clockwise." Created out of raw Flickr data by the kids over at HINT.FM.

Franco Moretti: Mining Print Data

"Take one experiment. Moretti decided to test the idea that Victorian writers, through their choice of adjectives, might reveal their belief that moral qualities were indivisible from reality itself and that physical traits reflected a person's virtue. So he assembled a database of 250 novels and sent the file to computer scientists at IBM's Visual Communications Lab, who turned the books into a series of word clouds. "Boom! There were exactly the adjectives I had hoped would pop up!" he says. "Adjectives like strong, bright, fair, in which the physical and the moral blend."

The Modern Listener’s Guide: Destroyer’s Rubies

Modern Listeners Guide Amazing infographic by Jez Burrows breaking down Destroyer's 2006 album Destroyer's Rubies, of which I'm tracking down as I'm thoroughly intrigued. This is the kind of data I want to mine once we get all of Modular's stuff into a database. Really amazing work. Somehow I'll have to convince The Bear to get this for me. Early birthday present. (Hat tip to datavisualization.ch for finding this, double hat tip to @PonyMcPonies for pointing me in their direction).

The Very Best At Santos Party House

The Very Best Swiped this one from The New York Times (and it's not the first time either). I really like these infographics, being a data nerd and all, but it's also in the way they approach their data in that it's such a left-field approach. I don't necessarily think it's that easy either, you need to have someone who understands data mining and, well, information design. Jonny Drop Table and I have started looking at getting all of Modular's song data into a database - everything from standard record label attributes all the way to custom tagging and lyrics - once this is done I'm going to find a kid studying information design and invite them to start drilling through the data and producing imagery like this.
