Kripy Irregular Mailer #131, Cold Wet Eels, for Wednesday April 23rd.

 |
Cold Wet Eels
I was under the assumption that things - such a clumsy word things - would be challenging. All the time. The thing is that those who set up my configuration file got it a little wrong. Mistakes are okay, as long as you take on the responsibility, but undoing that which cannot be undone makes for a perilous picnic indeed. Ants or no pants, at some point in our lives we'll need to jump the wall of frustration. Just don't overcook the landing okay?

Kripy Selects
Gay Bash is Dead feat. K.I.M. + Ajax + Nicky Van She + Gay Bash DJs

Friday April 25th (11pm) at Will & Toby's (134 Oxford St, Darlinghurst). Presale $25. I was rather saddened to hear that the boys that put the "H" in GHB were calling it quits, hanging up their post-modernist wigs and heading off to explore greener pastures, the VB that soiled many a couch a long and endearing stain to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Music
Sparkadia + Cuthbert & The Night Walkers + Philidelphia Grand Jury
Wednesday April 23rd (7pm) at Hopetoun Hotel (416 Bourke St, Surry Hills). Presale $12
50 Cent & G-Unit
Wednesday April 23rd (7pm) at Sydney Entertainment Centre (35 Harbour St, Darling Harbour). Presale $98
The Beatnuts + Jeru the Damaja
Thursday April 24th (8pm) at Manning Bar (Manning Rd, University of Sydney). Presale $35.
Oh ... The Beatnuts, not The Beat Junkies. (Trust me, it's the right sort of wrong connection to make). The Beatnuts have produced the likes of Cypress Hill and Naughty By Nature before turning their skills on themselves, turning out a couple of gems in "Intoxicated Demons" and "Street Level" to name but a few.
Juliette & The Licks
Friday April 25th (8pm) at The Forum (The Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park). Presale $42.
Juliette Lewis, out here as a guest presenter for the MTV Australia Awards 2008, decides her little stopover would be nothing without taking The Licks for a spin.
My Disco + Fabulous Diamonds + Ohana
Friday April 25th (8pm) at Oxford Art Factory (38-46 Oxford St, Darlinghurst). Presale $10.
I still haven't managed to make it all the way through "Paradise", the second long-player from Melbourne math-rockers My Disco, but no matter ... the intensity of the opening track, "|", is more than enough to seal the deal. Fabulous Diamonds and Ohana are the icing on the cake.
Adrian Deutsch + Tim Derricourt + Foxx On Fire
Friday April 25th (8pm) at Hopetoun Hotel (416 Bourke St, Surry Hills). $10.
Ex-Red Rider working a folk angle.
An Evening With Eels
Sunday April 27th (8pm) at Enmore Theatre (118-132 Enmore Rd, Enmore). Presale $71.
Good afternoon, sir, have you written tonight's set list?
Helmet
Wednesday April 30th (8pm) at The Gaelic (64 Devonshire St, Surry Hills). Presale $48.
"Strap It On", Helmet's first album, somehow made it into my head and has been on high rotation of late. Not for the faint-hearted, and making me wonder how I was so into it when I was a tadpole, the album reeks of angst, is noisy, and just bloody good. (Word around the campfire is the band are playing "Meantime" from start to finish).

Club / Party
Wamp Wamp feat. DJ Klever
Thursday April 24th (10pm) at Club 77 (77 William St, Darlinghurst). Presale $15.
He likes his tatts, he likes his crunk, he's been twice crowned DMC Champion, he's the third member of turntablist crew The Allies, he's DJ Klever, and he's been snatched for the resurfacing of the subterranean "bangathon" that is Wamp Wamp.
Essential Music Festival 08 feat. Ratatat + Regurgitator + Dardanelles + Talons + Straight Arrows
Friday April 25th (12pm) at Various Venues (Devonshire St, Surry Hills). Presale $50.
The Shocking Pinks, Grafton Primary, The Devoted Few, The E.L.F, Gaslight Radio, The John Steel Singers, The Seabellies, The Silents and Reptiles.
Break Inn feat. Capoeira Twins
Friday April 25th (10pm) at Chinese Laundry (111 Sussex St, Sydney). $15 before 10pm, $20 thereafter
What can I say, I was weened on breaks from a young age and have such a soft spot for them. The Capoeira Twins are, for me anyhow, best known for a sweet little number titled "4 x 3", a little jazz-styled ditty with silly lyrics and all the tricks that made breaks impossibly irresistible.
Lawn Party 2008 feat. British India + Old Man River + Van She + Lost Valentinos + Cassette Kids
Saturday April 26th (11am) at Randwick Racecourse (Alison Rd, Randwick). Presale $165. Holy crap!
Remember what Mister Ed said kids: "Ketamine makes horses sleepy".
DNBBQ feat. DJ Marky + Stamina MC
Saturday April 26th (6pm) at Manning Bar (Manning Rd, University of Sydney). Presale $35.
I called in the big guns, Whitey aka White Noise, to get the lowdown on Marky: "He's put Brazilian drum and bass on the map, known for his soulful Brazilian style sets these days with a few tricks thrown in, he's a pretty good scratcher/turntablist. And he talks like a chipmunk". Thanks Whites!
Pomomofo + Cassette Kids + Beaufort
Saturday April 26th (8pm) at Hopetoun Hotel (416 Bourke St, Surry Hills). $8.
"Mike Forward of the Pomomofo wrecking crew at your service". It's got quite a good ring to it no?
Future Classic Label Night feat Todd Terje
Saturday April 26th (10pm) at Civic Underground (388 Pitt St, Sydney). Presale $20.
Who is Todd Terje? Future Classic Chad has this to say about the man: "Think sparkly cosmic disco and fancy floor-filling re-edits meeting techno under the watchful eye of a quirky Norwegian. Terje speaks of catchy rhythms, dubby sounds, dreamy synth layers, cinematic moods, a playful approach and searching for that one nerve when asked to describe his music - the resistance to being pigeonholed is obvious".

Culture
FASHION
The White Book Fashion Exhibition
Thursday April 24th (12pm) at Gaffa Gallery (Level 1, 7 Randle St, Surry Hills). Exhibition continues until Tuesday May 6th (Mon-Fri, 12pm-6pm; Sat, 11am-6pm). FREE!
I didn't get a chance to ask The White Book kids about their inaugural fashion exhibition, I'm a slack ass is why, suffice to say the list of labels include Alexi Freeman, Ghost & Lola, Lady, Limedrop, Premonition and Vicious Threads.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Five Pockets
Thursday April 24th (6pm) at Monster Children Gallery (20 Burton St, Surry Hills). Exhibition continues until Saturday May 10th (Wed, 12pm-6pm; Thu, 12pm-7pm; Fri, 12pm-6pm; Sat, 12pm-5pm). FREE!
32 photographers are each given a pair of Lee jeans, and a model, to have their way with. Enough said other than without a doubt my favourite flavour of denim.
IMPROV
Scrabble Unscripted
Thursday April 24th (8pm) at The Factory Theatre (105 Victoria Rd, Enmore). Presale $25.
The Cracker kids have come up with the ingenious idea of teaming a Scrabble champ up with a bunch of top improvisers, plus a special guest, to create hilarious scenes out of an onstage game that is projected onto the wall behind them.
MAGIC
James Galea: I Hate Rabbits
Friday April 25th (7pm) at Enmore Theatre (118-132 Enmore Rd, Enmore). Presale $30.
Look ... the rabbits probably hate us too, it's not like they really wanted anything to do with Myxomatosis but we served it up to them anyhow. James Galea, Australian Magician Of The Year, may not be pulling any Myxomatosis rabbits out of a hat, but he has managed to crack Hollywood and Las Vegas without a giant tiger in sight.
SPOKEN WORD
Henry Rollins
Friday April 25th (8pm) at York Theatre, Seymour Theatre Centre (Corner City Road and Cleveland Street, Chippendale). Performance continues until Saturday April 26th (8pm). Presale $53.
From State of Alert, to Black Flag, to Rollins Band, Henry Rollins was the front man that every other band wanted. In between tunes that man was able to sedate even the toughest, roughest crowds with his anecdotes on life, something he's been working on, spoken word, all his life. Without a doubt a voice of reason.
FILM
Kurt Cobain: About A Son
Wednesday April 30th (7pm) at Greater Union Bondi Junction (Westfield, Level 6, 500 Oxford St, Bondi Junction). $15/$12.
Kurt Cobain was an areshole. I'm allowed to say that. I've read a biography, "Heavier Than Heaven", that exposes a genius musician who just couldn't get it together. Harsh maybe, but true, and harsher having to read it after being such a loyal fan. "Kurt Cobain: About A Son" features audio interviews with Kurt over lush cinematography of the band, a ghost story if you will.

About Kripy
Kripy is me, Arturo Escartin, trying to make sense of the city I live in, Sydney. The Kripy Irregular Mailer contains the picks of the litter with the website updated daily. I may miss a week here or there - don't hate me for it. Ulterior motives exist: a place to brain dump; a way of sharing the constant deluge of things that are sent to and discovered by me, both analog and digital; a website I can truly call my own, the essence of "time suckage" which keeps me creating, evolving, learning and innovating on all things web.
