Kripy Irregular Mailer #140, No Time Like The Now, for Wednesday July 2nd.

No Time Like The Now

I'm taking a couple of weeks off to do some much needed website housekeeping as well as a sanity check via some serious mental flossing. I'll still be posting events so keep hitting the site or alternatively find it yourself via Kripy x Sydney Events. Don't worry, it's not serious, it never is, there's just a couple of things - one with the working title of "Kripy On The Go" - that I really want to complete that I just can't find the time to get out. And for those in the know, more of the little boy, analog hedgehogs (including Rabbit), "Souls Are Us", snowmen, Rat Land, shrink juice, Mackerel, and even maybe a spotted snowman ... next time.

Kripy Selects

Bazaar 08
Sunday July 6th (11am) at The Clare Hotel (20 Broadway, Ultimo). FREE!
 Add

"A subversive artist's fleamarket is being staged as an official Biennale of Sydney satellite event as part of the discussion surrounding local versus international and community versus commerce. We have invited Australian artists to participate in the event with stalls, performances and other ideas." Clare, she of Terminus Projects, is pretty excited about this one, and how, an artist's bazaar in a bar indeed.

Music

Lost Valentinos + Kill Teen Angst + The Vignettes

Friday July 4th (7pm) at Sonar (1 Olympic Dr, Milsons Point). Presale $10.   Add

There's a single on the way, "The Bismarck", from an anticipated debut long-player, yet to be named, from a band that from what I can remember haven't played in a while. Might be due to the fact that they've been traipsing around the world (Berlin, London) working on said album.

End Of Fashion + Cuthbert & The Nightwalkers + Bridgemary Kiss

Thursday July 3rd (8pm) at Annandale Hotel (17 Parramatta Rd, Annandale). Presale $17.   Add

A little birdie tells me they started their encore with a cover of "Aneurysm", an intensely ferocious old school Nirvana track. Really? Cuthbert & The Nightwalkers. Really?

Belles Will Ring + The Dolly Rocker Movement + The Retreat

Friday July 4th (8pm) at Oxford Art Factory (38-46 Oxford St, Darlinghurst). Presale $12.   Add

Sounds like "the ghost of Phil Spector, hung out to dry by the subway tiles, aggressively harmonising with the telegraph wires." I hear psychedelic voices over folk rock and had a momentary lapse of Ride. Only for a brief moment mind.

Smudge + Sam Shanazzi + Grand Banks + January + Bambino Koresh

Sunday July 6th (4pm) at Annandale Hotel (17 Parramatta Rd, Annandale). $5.   Add

Even Dando of Lemonheads fame once wrote a song about Smudge drummer, Alison Galloway, titled "Alison's Starting to Happen". Truth! (I think he really liked her).

Access All Ages Feat. Dappled Cities + The Seabellies + The Wahas

Sunday July 6th (5pm) at The Factory Theatre (105 Victoria Rd, Enmore). Presale $17.   Add

All ages, meaning ankle-biters galore, no alcohol meaning you'll have to sneak out around the corner to Vic on the Park in order to wet your appetite. You are over 18 aren't you?

Mixed Bag #1

DJ/CLUB
Click-Click feat. Jerry Bouthier + Anna Lunoe + Hookie

Friday July 4th (11pm) at Oxford Art Factory (38-46 Oxford St, Darlinghurst). Presale $15.   Add

Parisian Jerry Bouthier is a London-based DJ and producer who holds the rather prestigious title of resident DJ for Kitsune parties, first in Paris before being hauled over to London to back it up at the now infamous BoomBox night. With tales of Rex The Dog and Headman sitting alongside Feist and The Young Punks this one's looking like a keeper.

MOTOR DANCE
Grafton Primary + The E.L.F.

Friday July 4th (8pm) at Spectrum (Oxford Street, Darlinghurst). Presale $12.   Add

"The Motorhead of dance" apparently, although I can't really discern any speed/acid/bourbon laced lyrics nor any mentions of the Ace of Spades. Plenty of synth-pop though.

DJ/CLUB
No Answer feat. Graz + (Pip + Aimee) + Gay Bash DJs

Saturday July 5th (8pm) at Q-Bar (Upstairs, 44 Oxford St, Darlinghurst). $5 before 10pm, $10 thereafter.   Add

"Same place, same time, same amount of right on". Luke No Answer should get a job in PR, hell, he probably is in PR, because he's terribly good at getting me to ... free drinks you say. "The fine gentlemen at Smirnoff have decided to No Answer." No kidding, well then. That changes everything really. (Responsible drinking people).

DJ/CLUB
Sounds on Sunday feat. Kid Cudi + Kato + Anna Lunoe

Sunday July 6th (3pm) at Greenwood Hotel (6 Blue St, North Sydney). $20.   Add

(Update your website kids because nothing bugs me more). I quote myself although I didn't really want to: "Having delivered the stoner anthem of 2008, "Day N Nite", Brooklyn by way of Cleveland rapper Cudi is now being touted as the kid to watch. And for good reason."

FILM
The Oasis (2008)
Monday July 7th (7pm) at Greater Union Bondi Junction (Westfield, Level 6, 500 Oxford St, Bondi Junction). $15/$12.   Add

"I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell." These words from Paul Moulds, "Captain" of the Oasis, a youth refuge in inner-city Sydney which is the last chance for some of the 22,000 teenagers that go homeless in Australia each night. "The Oasis", shot over two years, documents the extraordinary strength of a man battling to provide care for some of these street kids.

Mixed Bag #2

ART
Benedict dos Remedios: Last One Standing

Exhibition continues until Tuesday July 15th (Mon-Sat, 10am-6pm) at Charles Hewitt Gallery (335 South Dowling St, Darlinghurst). FREE!   Add

I totally missed this one last week, I'm really good at that and a little peeved because I'm quite the fan of the work produced by Benedict dos Remedios. His last effort, "Drifting", was all amazing jellyfish with paint drippings for tentacles. This time around Remedios has turned his attention to the humble cactus, exploring the themes of resilience and survival using a mixed bag of water-colour, acrylic, and spray paint.

FILM
Reel Anime 2008

Thursday July 3rd (11am) at Dendy Newtown (261-263 King St, Newtown). $14/$10.50.   Add

Nothing like a bit of Manga on the big screen. (You'll always catch me hanging out the back at the Chauvel's annual Miyazaki showcase). The Reel Anime program is a little compact in four films, but it covers everything from six tales of a troubled superhero in "Batman: Gotham Knight" to the very Miyazaki looking "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time".

ART
Anthony Bartok: Kids Now

Friday July 4th (6pm) at China Heights (257 Crown St, Darlinghurst). FREE!   Add

Anthony Bartok paints pictures directly from the social pages. Why? "More than any other era in pop culture, the lines between anonymity and celebrity are constantly being blurred. Staring at the bright faces with glazed eyes and 80s ensembles, it's hard to shake the feeling that you've seen the faces in the portraits before."

ART
Skye Robertson: Scissors, Paper, Rock

Saturday July 5th (4pm) at The National Grid (24 Chard Rd, Brookvale). Exhibition continues until Sunday July 27th (Mon-Wed, Fri, 9am-5pm; Thu, 9am-7pm; Sat, 11am-3pm;). FREE!   Add

Dear Simon: "Have you got a press release for this one - I was going to drop it into Kripy? Or should I scrape the beautiful words from the invite: "Skye is intuitively drawn to discarded objects and messages. Collage and assemblage is a medium which allows her to express sensitivity toward found materials. The once retired or ephemeral are rescued and brought together in unexpected ways to create a fresh aesthetic. You think?"

Loud Noises

Episode 47: Graped Through

And while I'm on the subject of the Polaroid kids, and not to mention on a roll too, they’ve recently dropped Episode 47 featuring the likes of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, M83, Snowman, and Fabulous Diamonds.

Horse Shifter

Sao Paulo native Nove spotted whilst perusing Wooster Collective.

Mike Hunter

Photographer Mike Hunter takes the Cityshrinker idea to a whole other level.

The Roots: Rising Down

I blame Jonny Polaroid for putting me onto this one and agree entirely with his comment on Mos Def crushing the first verse of the album's title track, "Rising Down".

KAWS x i-D Magazine

Pharrell gets the Spongebob Squarepants treatment, Nigo gets interviewed.

Is That

A Crate Man on the end of your crane? It is a Crate Man on the end of your crane.

I Can't Go For That #1

The Mighty Boosh go to school on Hall and Oates.

I Can't Go For That #2

To hell with it ... here's the tune in its entirety. Now that's what I call a moustache! (And here I am feeling sorry for myself with a half-clipped beard).

About Kripy

Kripy is me, Arturo Escartin, trying to make sense of the city I live in, Sydney. The Kripy Irregular Mailer contains the picks of the litter with the website updated daily. I may miss a week here or there - don't hate me for it. Ulterior motives exist: a place to brain dump; a way of sharing the constant deluge of things that are sent to and discovered by me, both analog and digital; a website I can truly call my own, the essence of "time suckage" which keeps me creating, evolving, learning and innovating on all things web.

Make Contact

Say hello at input.

Alternatively you can send me some old school snail mail:

And please don't get angry at me if I don't get back to you. The more time spent managing the inbox means less time spent finding things for you to do, read, listen, buy and whatever else fancies a tickle.
